Subject Setting

      School of Ethnology and Sociology (Xinjiang Institute for Advanced Study in Ethnology and Society) is the only research teaching school in XJNU. It consists of Department of Ethnology and Anthropology and Department of Sociology and Social Work and offers master and doctor degree programme of first-level discipline for Ethnology. Over the years, it has cultivated many professionals in Ethnology (Anthropology) and Sociology (Social Work).

Academic Team

      With a qualified teaching faculty, there are 24 staff members in School of Ethnology and Sociology, with 12 of senior academic titles (five professors and 7 associate professors), 8 of doctor degree, 3 with post-doctor research experience and 7 with foreign research and learning experience. Moreover, there are two Xinjiang Outstanding Contribution Experts, one Germany Humboldt Scholars, five Xinjiang Tianshan Scholars, and one XJNU Kunlun Scholar. Being reasonable and stable in nationality, gender, age, learning-origin structure, academic title and education level, academic team of Ethnology and Sociology School is firm in political stand, solid in disciplinary theory, dedicated and united.

      School of Ethnology and Sociology (Xinjiang Institute for Advanced Study in Ethnology and Society) offers Doctor and Undergraduate Degree Programme of First-level Discipline for Ethnology, Region Key Discipline Ethnology, Region-level Undergraduate University Humane Social SciencesKey Research Base, namely Research Center of Minority Groups’ Modernization in Xinjiang, laboratory for featured and advantageous disciplines co-built by both the central and local governments, namely Xinjiang Ethnic Minorities’ Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Laboratory, Sociocultural Anthropology Research Institute, University Liberal Art Base, namely Xinjiang Cross-Border Nationality Research Center, Visual Anthropology Studio and Xinjiang Social Assessment Center.

Research projects
      School of Ethnology and Sociology ( Xinjiang Institute for Advanced Study in Ethnology and Society) has finished over 60 projects of national, provincial and ministerial level or entrusted by the state and province, including National Key Philosophy and Social Science Fund Project Consolidation and Development of Equality, Unity and Mutual Assistance among the Socialist Ethnic Relations, 8 International Cooperation Projects and 6 Assessment Projects of World Bank and Asian Development Bank. Moreover, over 30 monographs have been published, over 200 academic papers issued, and over 20 key reports written and submitted to ministries and commissions of the Central Government and Xinjiang Autonomous Region. It has made great contributions to economic, social and cultural development as well as harmonious society.

Academic Exchange

     School of Ethnology and Sociology (Xinjiang Institute for Advanced Study in Ethnology and Society) has invited more than 70 experts and scholars from well-known universities home and abroad to conduct exchanges and established academic exchanges with well-known universities and research institutes home and abroad. It has hosted such large-scale international conferences as the First Northwest Visual Anthropology Advanced Forum (International Conference) and International Symposium on the Prospects of 2012 Grassland Silk Road and Circum-Altay International Economic Cooperation Zone, as well as many national academic conferences, including the First Symposium on Cross-border Nationalities in Northwestern Border Area, Expert and Scholar Symposium on Xinjiang Ethnic Problem, Leap-forward Development and Harmonious Society Building in Xinjiang, the First Senior Training Camp on Folk Cultural Heritage Preservation and Inheritance in Northwest China, Symposiumon Visual Anthropology for 2012 Annual Conference of China Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, Cross-cultural Interaction: View of Chinese Ethnology, and the Third Northwest China Ethnology and Anthropology Forum.

Discipline Introduction

      Undergraduate Education

      Social Work: With a schooling period of four years, Social Work programme covers fundamental knowledge, basic theory and organizational & field investigation, aiming to cultivate professionals in civil affairs, public welfare, charity, social relief, social investigation, individual intervention and community service. Graduates can work in organizational management, administrative agencies or as public servants.

      Ethnology: With a schooling period of four years, Ethnology emphasizes fundamental knowledge, basic theory and field investigation especially, forming a training model for practical and research type talents. Graduates can do administrative work in government departments and enterprises or as key professionals in teaching and scientific research units.

       Postgraduate Education

      Ethnology: With a schooling period of three years, Ethnology is designed to cultivate professionals with high theoretical and practical quality who can work in areas of ethnic culture, ethnic religion, social development, cultural heritage preservation, visual anthropology and cross-border nationalities. In 2014, it was granted professional master degree programme for Social Work, aiming for professional postgraduates.  

       Doctoral education

      Ethnology: With a schooling period of three years, Ethnology has four research interests, namely Ethnology, History of Chinese Ethnic Minorities, World Ethnic Groups (including cross-border nationalities) and Chinese Minority Art, aiming to cultivate senior professionals in areas of Ethnic Theory and Policy, National History, World Ethnic Groups (including cross-border nationalities) and National Art.
