The University consists of 11 Colleges: Humanities; Law and Economy; Education Science; Foreign Languages; Mathematics, Physics and Information Science; Life and Environmental Science; Physical Education; Music; Fine Arts; Chinese Language Education and Elementary Education. In the Colleges, there are 41 subjects awarding master degrees, and 38 subjects offering bachelor degrees, and other subjects providing vocational programs. The University currently has over 800 teachers, among whom there are 70 professors and 290 associate professors.
College of Education Science

The College of Education Science , also called the Tianjiabing Academy of Education, was founded on January 6, 2001. It was set up on the basis of the Departments of Education and the Modern Educational Technology to meet the demands of the Chinese educational reform.
The College is made up of the Education Department, the Psychology Department, and the Department of the Modern Educational Technology, the Experimental Center , the Institute of Education , and the Office for Adult Education. Attached to the College, there are also the Xinjiang Normal University Education Center for Psychological Health, Xinjiang Society of Psychology, and the Correspondent Station of Xinjiang Education TV.
There are two specialties authorized to award master degrees: the Educational Principles and Curriculum, and the Educational Theories.
The College has 50 staff, with the middle-aged and young teachers as its main body. Of all the teachers highly capable of teaching and scientific research, there are 18 full professors and associate professors, 5 doctors and doctor-candidates, and 16 master degree holders and candidates. In addition, there are 6 honorary professors from the institutions both outside and inside Xinjiang.
Since the establishment of the College, more than RMB £¤ 2 million from the College and Xinjiang Normal University have been put into the purchase of advanced equipment both from home and abroad, such as camcorder, videotape, editing system and some common teaching devices. Now in the psychological lab, the only one in Xinjiang institutions of higher learning, there are more than 200 experimental instruments in use for psychological tests or surveys.
In recent years, substantial achievements have been obtained in the field of scientific research: the teachers have undertaken 10 local, national and international research projects, and published nearly 100 research papers.
The College offers 3 courses of teachers' education, the Pubic Education, the Pubic Psychology, and the Modern Education Technology, for the development of the competence in the future teachers.
Now there are total 1500 full-time students, including postgraduate, undergraduates and vocational students. There are some student organizations, such as the Society of Psychology for College Students, the Black-eye Photography Association and the Society of Computer. They, together with other scientific and educational activities and social practice, provide more opportunities for students to develop themselves in full scale.

The Law and Economic College £¬ consists of two departments, the Law and Economic Department and the Marxism and Leninism Department. After several decades' development, the College has formed a good structure of education for normal as well as adult students, in which there are 4 postgraduate specialties: Marxist theories , Thought and political education , Religion Theories, Regional Economics and the History of Chinese Communist Party , and 7 undergraduate specialties and vocational specialties: Law, Economics, Thought and Political Education, Human Resource Management , Religion Theories, etc. Now, there are about 90 postgraduates and 1600 undergraduates in the College.
There are 81 teachers, including 10 professors, 24 associate professors, 40 lecturers and 7 assistants in the College. Among them, there are 6 doctors and 19 masters. In recent years the College has attached great importance to teaching work and scientific research, and has had plentiful achievements. Now there is a region-level key discipline and a University-level key discipline which are under construction. The College possesses abundant books and modern teaching equipments.

The Collage of Humanities consists of Chinese language and Literature Department. Chinese and Uygur Languages Department, History Department and Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology. There are 20 professors and 28 vice-professors in the College, who form a teaching and research body influential in Northwest China . There are the subjects of Chinese Ancient literature, Chinese Philology, Ethnology, Chinese Minorities Language and Literature (Uygur Language and Literature, Mongolian Language and Literature), the History of Chinese Minorities and Teaching Philosophy which have enrolled postgraduate students.
Teaching and scientific research in the College has its own rich and distinctive national and geographical features. It has a achieved splendid results in the fields of Ethnology, Folklore, Science of Religion, Bilingual Education between Uygur and Chinese, Bilingual Dictionary between Uygur and Chinese, Western Literature, History and Minority Nationality, Literature and History of Varat, Science of Turpan and Loulan ,History of Central Asia, Tang Poetry, Novels of Ming and Qing Dynasty, Scholium, Philology and so on. Among them, Ethnology and Science of Region are the key subjects of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. College of Foreign Languages
The College of Foreign Languages was founded on December 25, 2000. The College is made up of six departments: the Research Institute for Linguistics & Applied Linguistics, the English Department, the Department of Japanese and Russian Languages, the Department of College English for Non-English majors, the Administrative Office, and the Center for Continuing Education.
The College was founded by joining two teaching institutions of Xinjiang Normal University : the Department of Foreign Languages and the Teaching Section for Non-English Majors. At present, the College possesses a teaching staff of 65 teachers, of which there is 1 professor, 11 associate professors and 17 lecturers. Among them, 1 has obtained PhD degree, 13 have obtained M.A. degrees and 5 teachers are pursuing courses for M.A. degrees. Over the past twenty years, 41 foreign experts or teachers have been invited from the Volunteer Service Organization of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (VSO), the English Language Institute of China (ELIC), the Educational Services Exchange with China (ESEC) and the Japan International Cooperation Association (JICA). So far the College possesses a well-organized working staff with a high level of professional ethics and teaching, as well as, academic research. The College has three foreign language specialties: English, Japanese, and Russian. The English Department, the Department of Japanese and Russian Languages together with the Department of College English for Non-English majors recruit four-year undergraduates, three or two-year program students and the adult correspondence students. The courses of the three departments can be classified into four categories, i.e., professional basic skill courses, linguistic courses, literature and culture courses and the other related professional courses.
Since 2000, the Department of English has begun a program offering MA in Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics. At present, there are 23 M.A. candidates in the department.
There are 438 four-year undergraduates in the English Department, of which there are 97 ethnic minority students. In addition, there are 930 adult students majoring in English. The English Department has also established long-term practicum (student-teaching) bases with 11 secondary schools in Urumqi . The passing rate of the Test for English Majors (TEM 4) and that of the Test for English Majors (TEM 8) have been gradually increasing in recent years.
There are also 76 three-year program students in the Department of Japanese and Russian Languages. The Department of College English for Non-English majors offers English courses for non-English majors, for two-year program students, and graduates of the whole University. The rate of passing the National Band-Four and Band-Six English Tests for College Non-English Majors surpasses the average passing rate of the other higher institutions in Xinjiang. In addition, the passing rate of Band 6 the English Test for College Non-English Majors for the postgraduates is over 85 percent.
In the past 26 years, the College of Foreign Languages has fostered about 1437 professionals from different nationalities majoring in English, Russian or Japanese Languages. They have been employed by secondary schools and all the other higher education institutions in the autonomous region, other non-education institutions in Xinjiang, and other parts of China .

College of Physical Education

As one of the sports institutions of higher learning among Xinjiang key universities, the College of Physical Education was established on July 1, 2000. Its predecessors are Xinjiang Teachers' Training Center built in 1970, and the Department of Physical Education of Xinjiang Normal University established in September, 1979. Through more than 30 years of the construction and development, the College has by now formed three bachelor-degree subjects: physical education, sports training and social physical education ( using Uygur and Mandarin as teaching language), and two master-degree subjects: sports training and sports humane sociology. It is the only sports institution of higher learning in Xinjiang at present which can bring up masters of sports. It also takes on the task of teaching physical education for the whole University.
Lying at Xinyi Road 19, Urumqi , the College has modern facilities like classroom building, library, track and field training centre, comprehensive gymnasium and stadium for training and competition. It is the cradle that develops sports personnel of higher education in Xinjiang as well as the ideal place for sports teachers, coaches, athletes and researchers and managers to have further education and do advanced research.
There is the teaching and administrative staff of 91 people in the College, among whom there are 3 professors, 28 associate professors and 36 lecturers. 8 of teachers have master degrees, 36 study the master courses, 2 doctorate candidates and 8 master candidates. There are more than 10 people who have national-level certificates of referees. In the past 30 years of development, there emerge a number of experts and scholars in the College, forming a teaching body of the young and middle-aged characteristic of high ability of teaching and scientific research. They have undertaken more than 20 projects issued from State Philosophical and Social Science, State Sport Administration, State Ministry of Education, Xinjiang Philosophical and Social Science, Xinjiang Department of Education and the University, with the fund totaling 300,000 RMB Yuan. They have published over 300 papers, dozens of books and textbooks, and obtained many awards at the provincial level and above.
Now there are more than 1000 full-time students, among whom 38 are postgraduates and 120 are master-course students. The College is made up of five teaching sections of track and field, balls, gymnastics, theory and sports for non-majors, and General Affairs Office, Postgraduates Office, Sports Science Institute, the Contest Administrative Center and the Centre for Adult Education. Different sports teams show sportsmanship and perform very well at the national meetings.

Founded in October 2000, the College of Music has 66 staff, of whom 3 are full-professors, 19 associate professors, and over 20 lecturers. With the joint efforts of several generations of teachers, the College has by now marched on the way of rapid development.
Now the College is the only institution of higher education with the full authority to award the master degree of musicology in Xinjiang. It consists of the Departments of Musicology, Performing Art and Music for Non-Music Majors. In addition, there are teaching and research Colleges such as the Research Centers of Yang Hongnian's Chorus Art, Dilper's Vocal Art, and of Mukum Art. There are more than 10 famous musicians and scholars both in China and abroad like Yan Liangkun, Yu Runyang, Yang Hongnian, Dilper, Fan Zhuyin, Jin Xiang, Chen Mingdao, Guan Jianhua and Xiang Yang, who are invited to work as visiting professors in the College.
The College offers the specialties of musicology, music performance and dancing education to normal and adult students. Since 2001, it has recruited post graduates for musicology, with different directions of ethnic musicology, vocal performance and teaching, keyboard performance and teaching, music education and composing technique and theory. Professor Zhou Ji, Zhao Tarim, Zhao Zenming and Zhang Huan all enjoy high reputation either as famous musicologist or as educator or as musician, and they supervise diligent MA candidates.
The open-door education and the good application of education resources in China and abroad are considered the most efficient way for the College to develop promptly. In recent years, it has invited more than 100 scholars and musicians well-known in China and abroad to give lectures and performance, and asked folk musicians to perform in class. Such pattern of education leads to a marvelous effect. In July, 1999, the College chorus troupe won three first-prizes in ¡°38 th C.A.Seghizzi International Chorus Competition¡± in Italy; in June, 2000, the College accordion troupe took seven first-prizes in International Accordion Competitions in Australia and New Zealand; Si Hongjun, a student in the College, stood the second place for solo in the 10th National Young Singers' Competition in China; and in 2001, the research project ¡° The Implementation of Quality-Oriented Education in Artistic Practices¡± of the College was awarded the Special Prize of Excellent Teaching Works in Xinjiang, and the Second-Prize of National Excellent Teaching Works in China. The College of Fine Arts was founded on September 30th, 2000. It originates from the Department of Fine Arts, Xinjiang Normal University , which was established in 1978 on the basis of the Fine Arts Teaching and Research Section, Urumqi No.1 Teachers' College. During the last 20 years, more than 2,000 graduates of different diplomas have come out from the College, thus making it a cradle for personnel of Xinjiang art education and creation.
The College has 41 teachers and staff members, three of whom are full-professors, 10 associate professors; it consists of four institutions, the Departments of Painting and Art Design, and the Research Colleges of Creation and Teaching and of Computer-Aided Design; and it offers specialties of Fine Arts Education, Oil Painting, Chinese Painting and Art Design to nearly 100 undergraduates.
With a fine teaching environment of facilities, equipment and plentiful books and reference materials, the College embodies the most distinctive national and regional character of Xinjiang, and has contributed a great deal to the development of higher education in Xinjiang.

Founded in September, 2000, the College of Mathematics , Physics and Information Science consists of Mathematics Department, Physics Department and Computer Science and Technology Department, the Comprehensive Center of Experiments, and the Long-Distance Education Training Base for Electronic Science and Application. It has 122 staff, of whom 9 are full-professors, 41 associate professors and 48 lecturers. The teaching facilities in use are valued above RMB 10 million, and another RMB 10 million will be spent for the betterment of these facilities in the coming 5 years. There are about 10 thousand books in the College library.
Now in the College six specialties of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Technology, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Communication Engineering, and Information and C alculat ing Science are offered for undergraduates, and three postgraduate programs of Elementary Mathematics, Mathematical Education and Physical Education provided for MS candidates. There are 2,568 normal students who study their postgraduate, undergraduate and vocational courses in the College, and 1,256 adult students who work in undergraduate and vocational programs.

The Life and Environment Science College consists of four departments: Chemistry Department, Biology Department, Geography Department and Tourism Department. Among its 126 staff members, 7 professors, 42 associate professors, 30 teachers who have Doctor's degree and Master's degree, 5 teachers who won the prize founded by Zeng Xianzi Educational Foundation, 5 members who won the title of ¡°National and Autonomous Regional Excellent Teacher¡± and 1 got ¡°Xinjiang Youth May 4th Medal¡±. More than 30 national and regional fund items have been supported and undertaken by our College, and the total outlay of scientific research adds up to 1.5 million Yuan, over 100 teaching materials, monograph and more than 1000 thesis papers have been published by our staff members. In the aspect of scientific research, our College has made the most outstanding achievements and had most items with the highest level in all Colleges of Xinjiang Normal University.
For undergraduates, the College has three normal majors: Chemistry, science of biology and science of geography, and four non-normal majors: Geography Information System, Tourism management, Environment Science and Biology technology. Now 4 granted subjects of Master's Degree ££ Humane geography, Natural geography, botany and Geography Information System are existed in our College. 5 authorized majors which are Tourism Management, Ecology, Microbiology, Environment Science and Inorganic Chemistry are being applied for. College of Chinese Language Education
The College of Chinese Language Education , founded in March of 1990, is an academic institution that mainly undertakes the teaching preparatory courses of Chinese Language to ethnic students of the University and overseas students. There are three teaching sections: the First Section is for the Preparatory Course of the Chinese Language; the Second Section for teaching in-service Chinese Language Programs and the Third Section for Teaching Chinese Language to Overseas Students.
The College has a strong teaching and research staff-body of 38 teachers. There are a full professor, 10 associate professors, 17 lecturers and 10 assistant teachers, of whom 10 have MA degrees. Since its founding, the College has trained 5000 students for one-year preparatory course, 2200 for two-year preparatory course, 62 overseas students and 760 students for adult education. Now the College has developed an overall system for various preparatory courses of Chinese language teaching, teaching Chinese languages to overseas students and training programs for students of adult education.
The College has taken great efforts in their academic research and made outstanding achievements. In the past years, they have published 15 books and more than 200 research papers in various academic journals. Their research fields cover ethnic education, bilingual education, and Chinese language proficiency examination. And they have obtained about 20 rewards for their teaching and research. Now the College enjoys a good reputation in teaching and research of the Chinese languages.
At the present time, the College is carrying out profound reforms in teaching patterns, syllabus and management so as to meet increasing demands of the developments in the discipline, for better trained Chinese language learners. The College aims to create a first class academic and learning environment for overseas students through these reforms, which are inspired by the West-China Development Strategies of the Chinese Government. We will establish regular undergraduate Chinese language programs to overseas students, including three-year and four-year programs, and we will establish training programs for Chinese language teachers of China proper and overseas. Our purpose is to develop the College and its teaching into the first class teaching bases for the overseas students who come to Xinjiang to learn language and Chinese cultures.

College of Elementary Education

The College of Elementary Education was set up in May 2002, with the main task of cultivating qualified elementary teachers in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It has total 56 staff members, including 36 professional teachers (11 associate professors). It owns a dancing room (144m2), an electronic piano room (95 m2, 41 pianos), four computer rooms (180 computers available), and an electric and electronic lab as well.
The College recruited students in Sep., 2002. Now the total number of students amounts to 889, of whom there are 403 Han students and 486 ethnic students. It contains seven specialties, including the Primary Education of Arts and the Primary Education of Science, and offer 44 courses. In addition, there are about 700 students at three correspondence-education stations.
By the year of 2007, the primary education students of fulltime study will amount to 1000 in all. On the basis of the successful management of three-year vocational programs, it intends to offer four-year undergraduate courses.
Centering on regulating the educational arrangement, improving the classroom teaching quality, and developing the skills of primary school teachers, the College will further its reform in teaching, and make progress rapidly and orderly.
