Introduction to School of Mathematical Science

School of Mathematical Science offers majors of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (normal education) & Information and Computing Science. Among the 54 staff members, there are 6 professors, 20 associate processors and 30 lecturers, 16 doctors (including 7 doctor students) and 29 postgraduates. It offers master degree programs for Fundamental Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Curriculum and Teaching Methodology in Mathematics. Moreover, it has the right to grant degree for Master of Pedagogy, Middle School Mathematics Teaching Theory, Middle School Mathematics Education and Professional Master for University Teachers. Currently, there are 125 postgraduates and over 700 undergraduates majoring in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as well as Information and Computing Science, Mathematics and Applied mathematics being university-level discipline with priority development. The school has undertaken 9 national projects, 17 provincial and ministerial projects, with an accumulative research fund of about 3.3 million Yuan, and also one provincial quality course. 139 papers have been published, with 90 SCI, EI and ISTP retrieval and 3 textbooks have been issued, with two provincial and ministerial excellent papers awarded.

At present, it consists of two laboratories, modern scientific computing laboratory, with mathematical modeling, statistical analysis and software engineering laboratories subordinate, and information processing laboratory, with voice and image analysis and open laboratories subordinate.

School of Mathematical Science actively advances curriculum system reform, aiming to form a course structure with good foundation and wide knowledge instead of departmentalism of the discipline. Aiming to give play to overlapping course functions of different parts, it emphasizes combination of knowledge and behavior through general education subjects and formative education. Specialized courses expand the room to accommodate for the discipline and deepens professional connotation. Courses of education discipline will help emphasize the target and specialty for teachers’ education. Liberal arts will enrich students’ humanism connotation and international elements will help train students’ global view and cross-cultural communication. As for curriculum implementation system, it aims for quality formation, advocates demonstration teaching, create educational environment conducive to participation by students, build “aid learning classes” and cultivate student’s ability to learn based on questions. 

Majors offered and cultivating objective

1. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (normal education), undergraduate education, schooling period of four years.

Main courses: Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Algebra, College Physics, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Differential Equation, Function Theory, Discrete Mathematics, History of Mathematics, Numerical Calculation, Mathematical Model, Mathematical Experiment, Mathematics Teaching Theory, Fundamentals of Computer, Mathematics Methodology, Calculation Method, Operations Research and Combinatorics.

This major aims to cultivate teachers qualified for universities, colleges and middle schools, teaching research personnel and other teaching staff who master basic theory, knowledge and method for Science of Mathematics, and can solve mathematical problems with knowledge in mathematics and computer.

2. Information and Computing Science (non-normal education), undergraduate education, schooling period of four years.

Main courses: Mathematical basic courses (Analysis, Geometry and Algebra), Probability Statistics, Mathematical Model, Physics, Computer Basic Knowledge (Introduction to Computing, Algorithm and Data Structure, Base of Software System), Foundations of Information Science, Numerical Calculation Method, Computer Graphics, Operations Research and Optimization.

Being an interdisciplinary major with information field as the background, combined with mathematics and management, it aims to cultivate professionals with mathematical literacy, basic theory and methods of information science and computing science, initial research training and ability to solve actual problems with knowledge and computer skills learned. After graduation, students can work in scientific research, teaching, application software development and management in departments of Information and Computing Science, computer information processing, education, economy and finance.

It has cultivated over 4000 undergraduates, some of whom have become experts and backbones in middle school mathematics education or made remarkable achievements in computer science, information and economy thanks to their solid knowledge foundation. It has cultivated over 100 postgraduates, with about 30 graduates pursuing for doctoral study. Most of them work in universities and some have become academic backbone in domestic well-known universities, such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shaanxi Normal University.
